THE BUSINESS VALUE OF SAP HANA

Today’s enterprises are faced with the mandate of utilizing all the data assets at their disposal to optimize business processes and customer experience, drive new opportunities, uncover and mitigate risk, and ensure integrated operations. The ability to collect, manage, and analyze data in real-time is essential to support these initiatives and it enables businesses to compete in the digital economy.   Using an in-memory data management platform helps organizations achieve this data-driven transformation and enables organizations to become more responsive, agile, and efficient.

SAP offers such a data management platform with SAP HANA. At its core is an in-memory columnar database management system (DBMS). SAP HANA is optimized to combine transactional and advanced analytical workloads on diverse data, whether physically or virtually connected.  SAP’s transactional and analytical applications run on SAP HANA and the platform is increasingly used to build innovative new applications.

SAP took the bold step to design a new and innovative data platform leveraging 40+years of business and technology experience. This in-memory platform provides a foundation to enable the digital enterprise to act in real-time and help businesses realize the full potential of their data. The platform, which also delivers application development, multi-model support, data integration, and advanced analytics capabilities, is called SAP HANA and is the foundation for all future offerings from S A P.

Customers who used the platform and those that have done the latter were interviewed to ascertain and quantify the business value of using SAP HANA in building new applications.

Interviewed organizations explained that they have leveraged SAP HANA to fundamentally change their business operations by taking complex, voluminous data and turning it into actionable insights that are used across their business landscapes by leveraging custom applications. As a result, study participants can make better business decisions, deliver new types of services, identify areas for cost optimization, and deliver new functionalities and insights to employees, customers, and partners. Results include higher revenue, reduced costs, and more efficient operations.

Gaining the ability to deliver new real-time revenue-impacting service:
“For the first time, we are servicing real-time risk analysis with SAP HANA… With our old system, we couldn’t deliver the performance needed, so we couldn’t do this. We could have been losing significant amounts of business every year because we were unable to manage the risk scenarios.”

Driving operational flexibility to optimize investment costs:
“In our business, we have to be concerned about whether too much energy is being transported across the grid. That’s the biggest challenge for utilities at the moment… Building physical infrastructure is very expensive and that’s why we’ve turned to SAP HANA to help us identify use patterns to plan and supply energy accordingly.”

Freeing up database teams to focus on business initiatives:
“We haven’t had one data load issue in five years with SAP HANA. Previously, 30-40% of our staff’s time was focused on data load issues. Because we don’t have to focus our time on reloads or worry about whether the data is accurate, we can focus on actually building new things.

It has become increasingly important for organizations to leverage data to their competitive advantage to compete in the digital economy. However, they must do this while facing significant challenges, including continued growth to already huge volumes of operational data, new technologies that create additional sources of data, and increased expectations from line of business users and customers about the timeliness, quality, and impact of data-driven insights. Handling these demands requires organizations to have a data management platform sufficiently robust and flexible, and with capabilities that allow organizations to run and deploy applications that enable them to transform data into value for their businesses.
