GIVE DESIGN AND DESIGNERS THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE

As you reflect on progress made this year and plan ahead for the next, I urge you to consider the importance of design – in life, business and society at large. In recognising progress, we rarely pay attention to the role played by design and designers. In this Innovation by Design issue, we single out design as a key instrument for solving some of our pressing challenges, including climate change, governance systems, racism and even access to resources. What ultimately brings about change in society is how our products, systems and services are designed.

An example of this can be found in our cover feature, which focuses on head of Telkom Consumer Business, Lunga Siyo. It is interesting to note how design innovations are affecting Telkom’s bottom line, and the environment at large. We share with you this story of innovation and design within Telkom. Looking at Twitter, we introduce you to a design executive who is using design to improve our online interactions on the popular social media platform.

On the startup front, we share a new discussion with our readers about a proposed Startup Act in South Africa. In this issue, we get to hear from entrepreneur and business leader Matsi Modise, who outlines the value of a Startup Act for South Africa. We invite you to form part of the design process of the South African startup ecosystem. For the first time, we’ve invited a contribution from an economist who focuses on urban and city issues, Jodi Allemeier, who suggests there may be a need for city crypto coins to address local social and economic issues. I hope her ideas will move some to act and at least experiment with the idea of a city coin. For those interested in even more Fast Company design coverage, we are pleased to announce the publication of Innovation by Design: Creative Ideas that Transform the Way we Live and Work. The book – expertly edited by Suzanne LaBarre, who leads all of our global design coverage – features some of our best stories, along with new and original content. Lastly, as we approach the end of the year and the start of a new one, many people are thinking about new careers. With this in mind, we are recommending a few schools where you can enrol and study innovation. This annual list of best schools will be available as a companion to this publication in January 2022, on our website (www.fastcompany.co.za). We hope that some of the courses they offer will stimulate you to take forward your interest in design and – more importantly – help you design a better world and society. Enjoy your well-deserved break. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Most Innovative Companies 2022 event, where we will celebrate innovative designs
